A Dialogue with God
(From: Dialogue with
God by Mark Virkler)
Habakkuk 2:1,2
I will stand on my
GUARD POST...
And I will keep WATCH
and SEE
what He will SPEAK to
me...
Then the Lord...said,
RECORD THE VISION...
Keys to hearing God's voice from
Habakkuk's example:
1st Key: Learning what His voice spoken within sounds like.
2nd Key: Learning how to go to a quiet place and quiet your own thoughts and
emotions.
3rd Key: Learning to expect dreams and visions.
4th Key: Learning to write it down! 1st
Key:
God's voice in our hearts sounds like a flow of spontaneous thoughts. Therefore,
when I tune to God, I tune to spontaneity... As opposed to analytical or
cognitive thoughts connected to our mind. It's a spirit to spirit thing.
Spontaneous thoughts are connected with the heart... 2nd
Key:
I must learn to still my own thoughts and emotions, so I can sense God's flow of
thoughts and emotions within me. Psalm
46:10 "...know": Be still, and have communion with God; Be still and
have intimacy with God; Be still and have dialogue with God - that's what
"know" means... 3rd
Key:
God uses visions regularly to speak His words within our hearts. As I pray, I
fix the eyes of my heart upon Jesus, seeing in the spirit the dreams and visions
God gives me. 4th Key:
Journaling, the writing out of our prayers and God's thoughts, provides a great
new freedom in hearing God's voice. A
spiritual journal is simply a diary of my dialogue with God. Quick
Review:
Habakkuk is an example of a person who used the four keys in clearly discerning
God's voice:
1) He tuned to inner spontaneous thoughts
2) He stilled himself before the Lord
3) He used vision
4) He wrote out his prayers and God's response So,
here's our choice:
Our prayers can be dry, one-way monologues if we never take the time and energy
to discern God's voice, or we can have a real dialogue with the Creator of the
Universe who loves us, and wants to tell us things...wants to have a real
two-way relationship with each of us! But we must choose to take the time...as
in any relationship...and like any relationship, there are ups and downs
emotionally, but the fact remains: God
doesn't reveal His treasure to casual seekers.
